Scientists with the Department of Natural Resources monitor Maryland waters to determine the health of habitats for fish, crabs, oysters and other aquatic life. The results of our monitoring programs measure the current state of waterways, tell us whether they are improving or degrading, and help assess and guide resource management and restoration actions. Collect information on nutrient and sediment concentrations, algal blooms, and the physical, biological, and chemical properties of the water. While many water samples are collected and analyzed in a laboratory, modern instruments called water quality probes can collect some parameters immediately.
Water quality sensor, which can be immersed in water, with various sensors to measure various parameters.
