Water level sensors play an important role in rivers, warning of flooding and unsafe recreational conditions. They say that the new product is not only stronger and more reliable than others, but also significantly cheaper.
Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany say traditional water level sensors suffer from one or more limitations: they can be damaged during floods, they are difficult to read remotely, they cannot measure water levels continuously, or they are too expensive.
The device is an antenna installed near the river, above the surface of the water. It continuously receives signals from GPS and GLONASS satellites – part of each signal is received directly from the satellite, and the rest indirectly, after reflection from the surface of the river. The farther along the surface it is relative to the antenna, the longer the reflected radio waves travel.
When the indirect portion of each signal is superimposed on the directly received portion, an interference pattern is created. The data is transmitted to authorities through existing mobile networks.
