In a major project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed 60 additional automatic weather stations (AWS) across the city. Currently, the number of stations has increased to 120.
Previously, the city installed 60 automated workplaces in district departments or fire departments. These weather stations are connected to a central server located at the BMC Worli data center.
To get accurate local rainfall data, the National Center for Coastal Research (NCCR) recommends installing an additional 97 AWSs throughout the city. However, due to cost and safety reasons, the municipality decided to install only 60.
The contractor must also maintain AWS and the disaster management portal for three years.
The stations will collect information on precipitation, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction.
The collected data will be available on the civil disaster management portal and will be updated every 15 minutes.
Apart from strategically preparing and implementing disaster plans during heavy rainfall, rainfall data collected through AWS will also help the BMC alert people. The collected information will be updated on dm.mcgm.gov.in.
Some of the places where AWS has been installed include Municipal School on Gokhale Road in Dadar (West), Khar Danda Pumping Station, Versova in Andheri (West) and Pratiksha Nagar School in Jogeshwari (West).
