The Pakistan Meteorological Department has decided to procure modern surveillance radars for installation in various parts of the country, ARY News reported on Monday.
For specific purposes, 5 stationary surveillance radars will be installed in different regions of the country, 3 portable surveillance radars and 300 automatic weather stations will be installed in different cities of the country.
Five fixed surveillance radars will be installed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Cherat, Dera Ismail Khan, Quetta, Gwadar and Lahore, while Karachi already has a compatible radar facility.
In addition, 3 portable radars and 300 automatic weather stations will be deployed throughout the country. Balochistan will get 105 stations, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 75, Sindh 85 including Karachi, and Punjab 35.
CEO Sahibzad Khan said the World Bank-financed equipment will provide timely information on climate change and that the project will be completed within three years with the assistance of foreign and international experts and will cost Rs 1,400 crore (US$50 million).
