Ireland’s weather station upgrade plan launched to help more accurate weather forecasts and climate research

Dublin, November 13, 2024 – The Irish government recently announced a multi-million euro national weather station upgrade plan to modernize the country’s meteorological observation network, improve the accuracy and reliability of weather forecasts, and strengthen research capabilities on climate change.

Modernization and upgrading to enhance observation capabilities

According to the plan, the Irish Meteorological Service (Met Éireann) will fully upgrade the existing weather station network over the next five years. The new equipment will include advanced automatic weather stations that can monitor a variety of meteorological elements such as temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed, wind direction, precipitation, etc. in real time, and have higher data collection frequency and accuracy.

In addition, some weather stations will also be equipped with new lidar and satellite receiving equipment to enhance the observation of atmospheric structure. These devices will help meteorologists more accurately predict extreme weather events such as heavy rain, blizzards and heat waves, thereby improving the effectiveness of public warning systems.

Responding to climate change and promoting sustainable development

The Irish Met Office said that this upgrade is not only an important measure to respond to extreme weather challenges, but also an important step in responding to climate change. Through more accurate meteorological data collection and analysis, researchers will be able to better monitor and predict climate change trends and provide scientific basis for the government to formulate relevant policies.

Eoin Moran, director of the Met Office, said at a press conference: “The impact of climate change on Ireland is becoming increasingly significant. We need more advanced technology and equipment to meet this challenge. This upgrade will enable us to more accurately predict weather changes and provide more reliable data support for responding to climate change.”

Public participation, improving meteorological services

In addition to hardware upgrades, the Irish Met Office also plans to strengthen interaction with the public and improve the level of meteorological services. The new system will support more convenient public data access and query services, and the public can obtain the latest meteorological information and warnings in real time through official websites and mobile applications.

In addition, the Met Office also plans to carry out a series of public education activities to enhance the public’s awareness and understanding of meteorology and climate change. Through cooperation with schools, communities and enterprises, the Met Office hopes to cultivate more talents interested in meteorology and climate change.

International cooperation, sharing data resources

The Irish Met Office also emphasized the importance of international cooperation. The newly upgraded weather station network will share data resources with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and meteorological agencies in other countries to enhance the overall capabilities of the global meteorological observation network.

Director Moran said: “Climate change is a global issue that requires global cooperation to solve. We hope to work with international partners to share data and technology and jointly address the challenges brought by climate change.”

Conclusion

The Irish weather station upgrade plan will not only enhance the country’s meteorological observation and forecasting capabilities, but also provide more reliable data support for addressing climate change. With the gradual commissioning of new equipment, Ireland’s meteorological services will reach a new level and provide better meteorological guarantees for the public and the government.
