Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has signed an agreement with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to install 48 automatic weather stations across the state. The stations will provide real-time weather data to help improve forecasts and better prepare for natural disasters.
Currently, the state has 22 weather stations operated by IMD. New stations will be added in the first phase, with plans to expand them to other areas later. The network will be particularly useful for agriculture, horticulture and disaster management, improving early warning and emergency response.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sohu said the move will strengthen the disaster management system in the state. Additionally, Himachal Pradesh has received Rs 890 crore from the French Development Agency to support a major project aimed at reducing the risks of natural disasters and climate change.
The project will also upgrade fire stations, build earthquake-resistant structures and create nurseries to prevent landslides. It will strengthen government disaster management agencies and improve satellite communications for better communications during emergencies.
