Recently, Ecuador’s National Meteorological Service announced the successful installation of a series of advanced wind sensors in many important areas across the country. This project aims to enhance the country’s weather monitoring capabilities and improve the accuracy of weather forecasts, especially in the context of increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
The project is implemented by the Ecuadorian government in cooperation with the International Meteorological Organization, with a total investment of US$5 million. The newly installed wind sensors can collect wind speed, wind direction and other data in real time and transmit the information to the National Meteorological Center via satellite. This will allow forecasters to better understand and predict weather changes, especially during extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes and storms.
Maria Castro, director of Ecuador’s National Meteorological Service, said at a press conference: “As extreme weather caused by climate change becomes more and more frequent, accurate meteorological monitoring becomes particularly important. The installation of these new equipment will significantly enhance Our early warning capabilities protect people and property.”
The installation of wind sensors covers multiple areas of Ecuador, including coastal, mountain and Amazon regions. The data collected by these sensors allows the Bureau of Meteorology to more fully analyze wind flow patterns, thereby improving the accuracy of local climate models.
The project also includes training for local meteorologists to ensure they can effectively use new technologies for weather analysis and forecasting. In addition, the Meteorological Bureau also plans to gradually expand the monitoring network and add more types of weather sensors in the next few years to form a more complete weather monitoring information system.
