CAU-KVK South Garo Hills under ICAR-ATARI Region 7 has installed Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) to provide accurate, reliable real-time weather data to remote, inaccessible or hazardous locations.
The weather station, sponsored by the Hyderabad National Climate Agricultural Innovation Project ICAR-CRIDA, is a system of integrated components that measures, records and frequently transmits weather parameters such as temperature, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, precipitation and rainfall.
Dr Atokpam Haribhushan, Chief Scientist and Director, KVK South Garo Hills, urged farmers to accept the AWS data provided by the KVK office. He said with this data, farmers can more effectively plan farming operations such as planting, irrigation, fertilization, pruning, weeding, pest control and harvest or livestock mating schedules.
“AWS is used for microclimate monitoring, irrigation management, accurate weather forecasting, rainfall measurement, soil health monitoring, and allows us to make informed decisions, adapt to changing weather conditions, prepare for natural disasters, and mitigate the effects of extreme weather events. This information and data will benefit the farming community of the region by increasing yields, producing better quality products and generating higher incomes,” said Haribhushan.
